Chapter Nine

Erin never imagined she’d be telling Max about her broken engagement. Yet here she was, about to reveal the single most humiliating experience of her life.

“He’s my ex-fiancé.” She didn’t want to go into detail, wished the memories hadn’t come back to haunt her. Mock her. She couldn’t bear to see the pity she knew would reflect in Max’s eyes once she told him about her past, so she turned away, heading to dinner, needing to escape. “It’s a very boring story. Hardly worth telling. Besides, dinner is about to be served, we can’t keep Brad and Skye waiting.”

The hand that snagged her wrist, halting the click of her heels against the cedar floor of the gazebo, was firm and sent fluttery sensations through her belly. “I have all night, Erin. Dinner can wait. I want to know why the memory of your ex-fiancé has upset you so badly.”

Because his touch was too potent and made her body throb with heat, she eased her wrist out of his light clasp, instantly missing the warmth of his fingers. “I’ve told you, it’s nothing.” Up until now, she’d done an excellent job of not thinking about Scott Bennett and how thoroughly he’d broken her heart.

“And I told you not to lie to me, Erin.” He took a step closer and her heart did an excited bump all the way into the base of her throat. “If you want to eat, start talking because we aren’t going anywhere until you do.”

Defeated, she puffed out a long breath, buying a couple of seconds as she combed her hair back from her face. “Fine. But you’ll see it isn’t even worth mentioning.”

“Humor me all the same.”

Not wanting to witness Max’s pitying regard, Erin folded her arms protectively under her breasts and paced away from him. “Scott and I were engaged to be married seven years ago. We spent two years planning the perfect wedding, then on the night of our rehearsal dinner he turned up late and drunk to inform me, right in front of our family and friends, that he couldn’t marry me because he’d fallen in love with another woman.” The hurtful memory sat heavy on her chest. If she focused hard enough, she could just about remember the look on Scott’s face. He’d fractured her world, yet he smiled, wanting her to be happy for him because he’d finally found love. Erin pressed a hand to her throat and forced herself to continue around the bleak lump obstructing her windpipe. “Apparently, he hadn’t known what love really was until he met her.”

“Ouch,” came Max’s mild interjection. Fabric rustled as though he’d slipped his hands into his pants pockets.

She blinked back tears. Not because she’d lost Scott, but because he’d chosen to give her the news in front of everyone she cared about. What she wouldn’t have given for him to tell her privately days before the rehearsal. When her dad had lunged for Scott it had been all she could handle of the indignity.
